Chief Technology Officer (CTO)
Location: San Francisco Bay Area (100% in-office; daily collaboration with the Founder/CEO)
About the Role
A fast-growing, AI-driven B2B workflow and automation platform is hiring a founding-level, hands-on CTO to own architecture, scale the product, and build the engineering organization as the company moves through Series A/B and beyond.
This role is ideal for a builder—someone who ships, takes full ownership of the technical roadmap, and thrives in a high-urgency environment where clear decisions and rapid execution matter.
You will operate as the Founder’s closest technical partner and a key voice with customers, investors, and potential funding partners. Candidates who have participated in fundraising, investor diligence, or strategic technical presentations to VCs will be strongly preferred.
What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Own the end-to-end architecture across:
- System of record for workflows, materials, documentation
- System of intelligence for forecasting, risk detection, and operational insight
- Agentic execution layer powered by LLM-based agents
- Stay hands-on with the stack (Node.js, Python, React, AWS) and review core system and agent-design decisions.
- Make foundational decisions on data models, multi-tenant SaaS architecture, scalability, observability, and security.
LLM / Agentic Systems
- Lead all LLM / AI initiatives, including:
- Retrieval & embedding pipelines
- Automated workflow, communication, and document-understanding agents
- Safety, performance, testing, and monitoring of agents in production
- Build resilient AI systems that customers can rely on for mission-critical work.
Team Building & Execution
- Recruit, level up, and lead a distributed engineering team across the U.S. and international markets.
- Instill a culture of urgency, accountability, proactive communication, and customer-first delivery.
- Establish engineering rhythms, technical reviews, and operational dashboards.
External Leadership
- Represent the technology vision to customers, prospects, design partners, and investors.
- Partner closely with the Founder/CEO during fundraising—support technical diligence, articulate architectural choices, and give investors confidence in the scaling plan.
- Communicate clearly and decisively about tradeoffs and long-term technical strategy.
What We’re Looking For
Required
- 10+ years in software engineering, including:
- Senior IC / Staff / Principal experience in a high-performing engineering environment
- Leadership experience (Head of Eng / VP Eng / CTO) in early-stage or high-growth companies
- Production experience with LLM-based systems, including agent orchestration, retrieval, and workflow automation.
- Strong systems background:
- Architecting and operating multi-tenant SaaS on AWS
- Fluency with Node.js, Python, React, or similar stacks
- Experience leading distributed teams with high expectations around ownership and responsiveness.
- Experience working with VCs, participating in fundraising, or supporting technical due diligence (Series A/B experience strongly preferred).
- Exceptional communication skills—able to explain complex decisions to customers, non-technical executives, and investors.
Nice to Have
- Background in construction, supply chain, logistics, ERP, or other complex B2B operational domains.
- Experience with graph databases, workflow engines, or event-driven architectures.
- Track record of hiring and developing high-performing, diverse engineering teams.
